Stadler and WESTbahn today signed a contract to supply three high-speed trains based on the Swiss manufacturer’s SMILE platform.
The Austrian private operator will use them on the Vienna-Graz-Klagenfurt-Villach route from March 2026. These trains will be manufactured in Bussnang, Switzerland, and will become Stadler’s first high-speed trains in the country. They will have a maximum speed of 250 km/h.
The trains stand out for their accessible and comfortable design, with features such as low floors, pressurised and air-conditioned compartments, accessible toilets in each car, bicycle areas, adjustable seats in all classes, WiFi and USB ports at every seat.
This order is part of the modernisation of the WESTbahn fleet, which aims to set new standards in sustainability and comfort.
Christian Diewald, managing director of Stadler Austria, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We are delighted to work with WESTbahn to deploy innovative and efficient trains in record time”.
According to the manufacturer, with advanced technology and TSI authorisation to operate in several European countries, SMILEs promise to revolutionise cross-border rail transport.
