Stadler delays delivery of 22 trains to CP

.

The delivery of the 22 new trains ordered by Comboios de Portugal (CP) from Stadler will be behind schedule. The contract, signed in October 2020, envisaged the arrival of the first units by the end of 2025.

However, various contingencies, including the floods of October 2024, have made it impossible to meet the initial deadlines. These deadlines were already a year behind schedule due to CAF’s appeal to the contract award.

As reported by IRJ and confirmed to Trenvista by Stadler, the manufacturer will soon submit a proposal for a new delivery schedule, which CP will evaluate.

The order includes 12 bimode trains capable of operating on electrified and non-electrified lines and 10 electric trains, all for regional services.

These new units will improve transport efficiency, sustainability, and comfort, especially on journeys where electrification is not yet complete.

Before entering commercial service, the trains must pass the mandatory testing and approval process to ensure their safety and compatibility with the Portuguese network.

The delay will force CP to extend the lease to Renfe of several 592 series units further to maintain services on non-electrified lines until the new units arrive.
