Manufacturer Alstom has received an order from Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL) to supply 15 new 52-metre automated metro trains. This contract, valued at approximately 210 million euros, brings the total number of new-generation metro trains ordered for the Lille transport network to 42.
The new trains, which will replace the old VAL-208s from 2028, will be equipped with the Urbalis Fluence automated signalling and control system, an enhanced CBTC in which the routing and interlocking functions are taken over by the trains, which communicate directly with each other.
Each train will be able to carry up to 545 people and will offer greater comfort, better accessibility and more complete information for users.
This order is part of a plan to modernise the Lille metro network, which aims to improve transport services on lines 1 and 2.
The new vehicles, designed and assembled in France, will incorporate ecological and energy-efficient features, keeping Lille as the most frequent metro network in the world, with a train every 66 seconds during peak hours.
