Lokaltog, a Danish train operator, has signed a contract with Stadler for the supply of 14 FLIRT Akku battery electric units for the rail network in the Zealand region. The contract has an option for 10 additional vehicles.
The vehicles will be used on the Tølløsebanen and Østbanen lines, with the potential for operation on the Lollandsbanen and Odsherredsbanen lines. The new units will replace the IC2 diesel trains, which have been in service since 1997.
This award represents the inaugural order for battery-powered dual trains that Stadler has received in Denmark. The two-car trains purchased by Lokaltog will comply with all TSI accessibility technical specifications. Additionally, the trains will be equipped with air conditioning and a Wi-Fi connection.
The FLIRT Akku family is a variant of the popular single-deck regional trains that are capable of running on both electrified and non-electrified lines.
In the latter case, the manufacturer guarantees a range of 100 km even when the batteries are at the end of their service life. However, a unit on this platform holds the Guinness World Record for the distance travelled by a regional train powered by batteries without intermediate recharging, having travelled no less than 224 km in this mode.
