Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF has won its first order in Morocco. The ONCF (Office National des Chemins de Fer) has ordered 30 multiple-unit trains for long-distance services.
The contract, valued at around 600 million euros, includes the option to deliver 10 additional trains. It also allows the development of a technical assistance service and fleet parts supply contract for ONCF.
The trains, designed to operate at 200 km/h, will have a seating capacity of more than 500 and will connect major Moroccan cities such as Fez, Marrakech and Kenitra.
This project is part of Morocco’s infrastructure modernisation plan, with a particular focus on its rail network. It is also part of the preparations for the 2030 football World Cup, which the country will host together with Spain and Portugal.
The African country is developing an ambitious project to expand rail services from 51% of the population today to 87% by 2040. It will link more than 40 cities by rail, up from 23.
This contract will be financed through the Spanish Government’s FIEM funds.
