Spanish manufacturer CAF has today announced two new contracts for the manufacture of 53 trams for the cities of Rome and Bologna in Italy. The combined value of the orders is 200 million euros.
Up to 72 CAF Urbos trams for the city of Bologna
Bologna City Council has awarded a framework contract to supply and maintain 60 trams for four years, with the potential to extend the contract by an additional 20% to reach a total of 72 trams, following Italian legislation.
The contract signing includes a first firm order for 33 units and a six-year validity period for the purchase options.
The trams that CAF is manufacturing for Bologna will be of its Urbos platform and will measure 35 metres in length. They will be constructed from five modules and will have a capacity of up to 200 passengers. They will be equipped with an OESS system, enabling operation on non-electrified sections.
Supply of 20 new trams for Rome
The Roman public transport operator ATAC has exercised its option to purchase 20 trams for the Italian capital. This order is part of the framework contract to manufacture up to 121 units, with a firm order for 40 trams valued at over 130 million euros.
Both orders include five years of maintenance for the new vehicles. Additionally, the trams will feature an OESS system, enabling them to run on non-electrified infrastructure. They will replace the classic Stanga trams of the 7000 series, which have been in service for over 75 years.
The new vehicles will be 33.5 metres long and have a capacity of 215 passengers, 35 more than the current 7000 series.
