The American division of French manufacturer Alstom has signed a contract with Metrolinx to refurbish and modernise 181 GO Transit BiLevel cars in Ontario, Canada.
The contract, valued at approximately €340 million, will begin in 2026 at Alstom’s Thunder Bay plant. The refurbishment of these cars, built by Bombardier between 2008 and 2015, will sustain some 250 highly skilled jobs until at least 2030. They belong to the 8th batch of a series that began construction in 1976.
Improvements will include the installation of power outlets with USB ports, upgraded panels and flooring, replacement of seating, new accessible toilets and energy efficient LED lighting.
Michael Keroullé, president of Alstom Americas, thanked the Government of Ontario and Metrolinx for their renewed confidence, highlighting the unique expertise of the Thunder Bay team.
Michael Lindsay, Metrolinx’s interim president, said the renovation is vital to providing faster and more frequent rail service in the region.
