Swiss train manufacturer Stadler celebrated the 15th anniversary of its body plant in Szolnok, Hungary, with a historic milestone: the unveiling of the country’s first aluminium double-decker car.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, and Stadler CEO Peter Spuhler attended the event.
The Szolnok plant has become Stadler’s largest car body plant in Central and Eastern Europe. Since its opening in 2009, it has manufactured a total of 5,600 bodies and its trains operate in 14 different countries. The company has invested 200 million euros in this facility, demonstrating its strategic importance.
Spuhler announced future improvements, including the implementation of friction stir welding (FSW) technology for more sustainable production. In addition, the plant will produce both single-deck and double-deck bodies, creating 170 new jobs. Currently, Stadler vehicles cover one-third of the total distance travelled by trains of MAV, the Hungarian state railway company, carrying half of its passengers annually.
