SBB to renovate Simplon Tunnel in a four-year project

.

The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) is about to start renovating the Simplon Tunnel. The work will begin on 3 February and will last four years.

The work will focus on repairing the vault and improving the drainage of the 20 km eastern tube. It will be carried out in six-month periods until 2028, keeping the tunnel operational.

However, there will be adjustments to services, such as a reduction in the frequency of BLS-operated car ferry trains between Brig and Iselle.

The project will be coordinated with other works in Swiss tunnels to minimise the impact on Alpine rail traffic. The renovation of the Simplo tunnel will be carried out in parallel with improvements to the Domodossola-Milan corridor, which will affect services on the Simplon axis.

EC trains between Basel/Geneva and Milan will be reduced on weekdays, and the Domodossola-Milan line will be closed entirely during certain periods, with a replacement bus service implemented.
