The president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Salvador Illa, has accelerated plans for the development of the Camp de Tarragona tramway. This Sunday, Illa will visit Cambrils to take part in an event with mayors of the area in which he will announce the timetable for the development of the project, according to Diari de Tarragona.
The first phase of the tramway, which will link Cambrils, Salou and Vila-seca, will have a route of 14 kilometres and 14 stations. The President estimated that work would begin in early 2025, with an estimated budget of 150 million euros, although the timetable is being delayed.
In the long term, a network of 46 kilometres and 47 stations is envisaged, which will also connect Reus, Tarragona and Reus airport. In this way, it will replace the rail service eliminated with the opening of the Vandellós bypass.
The Government plans to put the works of the first phase out to tender early next year, after reaching an agreement with the Salou Town Council that unblocked the existing conflict. The agreed improvements include a catenary-free section to improve urban integration.
