The partial privatisation of Renfe could be among the objectives of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. Although he has not said so directly, Minister Óscar Puente has announced that they are going to consider “the challenge of turning Renfe into Aena in the not-too-distant future”.
This is what he said this morning at the Nueva Economía Forum, according to Europa Press. In his speech, Puente said that Aena is “a source of pride for the Ministry”. The company, which owns 51% of public capital through Enaire, is the sixth largest company in the IBEX 35.
In addition to its activity in Spain, Aena manages 33 airports in Brazil, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
Although this aenisation of Renfe could be limited to the promotion of international projects, it should not be forgotten that in January 2015, 49% of its capital went public in a partial privatisation orchestrated by the government of Mariano Rajoy.
In his speech, Puente defended the need for this new phase to be led by a transport manager. Although he has not confirmed the appointment of Álvaro Fernández Heredia, Secretary General for Sustainable Mobility, he has let it slip.
