Only 3% of Italian HSTs arrived on time between October and December

High-speed trains in Italy, operated by Trenitalia and Italo, are experiencing a punctuality crisis.

According to Ferrovie.info, a recent report reveals that between October and December 2024, more than 70% of the 22,865 trains monitored were delayed by 6 minutes or more. In total, they accumulated no less than 4,641 lost hours. Only 3% of trains arrived on time or early, and only 20% were delayed by less than six minutes.

The most problematic routes include Frecciarossa 9658 Reggio Calabria-Milan, with an average delay of 46 minutes, and Frecciargento 8348 Bari-Rome, with 38 minutes. Network congestion, especially on working days, aggravates the situation. According to the data, Friday is the worst day, with 2,400 trains delayed.

A study by Altroconsumo confirms that 36% of long-distance trains are late. According to Ferrovie.info, these figures explain the increase in trains running and the lack of adequate infrastructure. In 2024, Trenitalia paid 102 million euros in compensation for delays.

These data reveal a situation similar to that of Germany, where 37.5% of long-distance and high-speed trains were late in 2024.
