The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has expanded its Mireo train fleet with a new order from Siemens Mobility. This purchase, which includes 25 three-car units (73 m in length) and 5 four-car units (106 m), will bring the total of ÖBB’s Mireo fleet to 100 trains out of the 540 trains envisaged in the September 2003 framework contract.
The new vehicles, designed for commuter and regional services, will start service in 2029. Equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) and with a maximum speed of 160 km/h, these electric trains will operate in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic. This expansion reinforces ÖBB’s commitment to modernising local and regional rail transport in Austria.
Mireo trains are the evolution of the Siemens Desiro Main Line (Desiro ML) and are the platform for short and medium-distance trains currently marketed by Siemens Mobility. They are equipped with features such as air conditioning, WiFi, and barrier-free entrances.
In addition, the ÖBB cars have space for skis, snowboards, pushchairs and bicycles. A new feature in this release is that the cars will be slightly wider than in previous generations.
