On 10 April 2025, the Board of Directors of Île-de-France Mobilités approved the purchase from Alstom of 96 additional Z 58500 series trains, belonging to the RER NG (New Generation) family. Worth €2.1 billion, they will be used to renew the fleet on the RER D line.
With this order, the D line will have 132 trains of this series in service by 2029, consolidating the modernisation of one of the region’s busiest and least punctual lines.
This investment aims to improve the service’s comfort, capacity, and punctuality, which increased by 1% between 2023 and 2024 and reached 87.5% last year.
Since December 2024, a dozen of these trains have been running on the Corbeil-Essonnes branch line, and, provided that delivery deadlines are met, some thirty trainsets are expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
Île-de-France Mobilités points out that the RER NG stands out for its capacity (up to 1,800 passengers per train), total accessibility and modern equipment, such as wide doors, LED lighting, USB ports and intelligent air conditioning.
