Grupo Alonso takes over railway operator CEFSA

.

Grupo Alonso has announced its entry into the shareholding of Compañía Europea Ferroviaria (CEFSA), a Madrid-based company specialising in rail freight transport.

Although the company has not indicated the number of shares acquired, some sources claim they amount to 75%. This makes it the company’s main shareholder, to the detriment of the Raxell Group.

Grupo Alonso describes this acquisition as strategic and significantly strengthens the group’s logistics division and its presence in the rail sector on the Iberian Peninsula.

CEFSA, which will maintain its management team led by Gregorio Urdillo as CEO, provides a fleet of 29 series 269 locomotives and 81 articulated container wagons. The main route covered by CEFSA is the Valencia-Madrid-Valencia corridor, with more than 20 trains a week.

Grupo Alonso’s acquisition of the operator is part of its Global Logistics Plan. This strategic initiative seeks to connect the main maritime traffic points of the Iberian Peninsula by rail.

The plan, supported by the European Commission and the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, aligns with the objectives of the NextGeneration EU Funds to promote more sustainable and efficient transport.
