Deutsche Bahn (DB) has signed four long-term volume framework contracts, valued at 6.3 billion euros, to implement digital control and safety technology in the infrastructure.
The contract includes implementing digital interlocking technology (DSTW), the European Train Control System (ETCS), and integrated control and operation systems.
The successful bidders for this contract were Mermec Deutschland, Alstom (600 million), Hitachi Rail and the Siemens Mobility-Leonhard Weiss consortium (2.8 billion euros).
This new procurement model represents a paradigm shift in the rail industry. It provides long-term planning security and enables targeted investments in resources and production capacities.
The first orders under these contracts are expected to start in spring 2025, with projects extending to 2032.
The initiative aims to improve operational efficiency, contribute to environmental sustainability and position the railway as a competitive alternative to other modes of transport.
This digitisation effort will modernise Germany’s rail infrastructure and contribute to a more integrated European rail network.
