The Community of Madrid has awarded the contract for the extension of Metro Line 5, which will connect Alameda de Osuna with the Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 station at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport.
The project, which will cost 180.9 million euros and take approximately 30 months to execute, will begin in spring and last approximately 30 months. At the new terminal of line 5, an interchange station with line 8 will be built, which will have four platforms, two vestibules, and a surface area of 5,000 square metres.
Unlike most recent extensions, the tunnel will be executed through cut-off and the Belgian or traditional Madrid method.
This expansion will benefit the airport’s more than 66 million annual passengers and the 40,000 people who work and live in the area.
It will also provide direct access from the airport to the city centre. Line 5, which carries more than 77 million passengers annually, runs through 32 stations along 25 kilometres, connecting key points such as Gran Vía and Callao.
The project, financed with European funds, will improve connectivity with the centre of Madrid and offer an efficient alternative to private transport.
