New year, new chaos with Renfe’s 106 series trains. Due to a computer problem, Talgo’s Avril family trains were rendered out of service on 1 January.
Although the origin of the problem has not been revealed, it seems that the system did not handle the change of year properly. There was a Y2K effect in mid-2025.
To accommodate the affected passengers, Renfe is using other available trains to replace them, albeit with long delays. According to Renfe’s new punctuality commitment, travellers arriving more than an hour late will be compensated.
The first public notice of the incident was given by Adif at 10.40am on its X/Twitter account. An hour later, Renfe followed suit.
At midday, Talgo issued a statement on social networks indicating that the cause of the failure was a fault between the TCMS (the computer system that controls the train, developed for the first time by the manufacturer) and the battery charging system manufactured by Ingeteam.
