The Spanish manufacturer CAF has contracted with the Syndicat des Mobilités de Touraine to supply 19 Urbos trams. They will be destined for the future line 2 of the Tours tramway, which will connect the municipalities of La Riche and Chambray-lès-Tours. The new line is 12.5 kilometres long, has 22 stations, and is scheduled to enter service in 2028.
The new trams are designed to ensure accessibility and comfort. They will be 42 metres long and have a capacity for 280 passengers. They will also include multi-purpose areas for pushchairs, bicycles and wheelchairs.
In addition, they will use CAF’s onboard electricity storage technology to run without catenary. Specifically, they will do so on a two-kilometre stretch between Tours railway station and Place Choiseul.
The project promotes intermodality with buses and active modes, such as cycling and walking, through cycle lanes and pedestrian spaces. The new infrastructure will connect hospitals, educational centres with 30,000 students and cultural and sports facilities, reinforcing metropolitan cohesion.
This contract consolidates CAF’s presence in France after receiving orders in Montpellier and Marseille recently.
