The Andalusian Regional Minister of Public Works, Territorial Planning and Housing, Rocío Díaz, has confirmed that the Jaén tramway will start operating in 2025, maintaining the planned deadlines.
The launch of this means of transport comes after years of abandoning the system, whose entry into service had been paralysed since its construction in 2011 due to political and economic conflicts.
Currently, the Junta is in the final phase of preparation for the tendering of the maintenance and operation contracts. The total investment amounts to 52 million euros, of which the Andalusian Government will assume 75%, while the City Council will cover the rest.
In addition, the medium-voltage wiring, which was severely damaged after more than a decade of disuse, is being completely replaced.
The tram, designed to run 4.7 kilometres with 10 key stations in Jaén, will connect strategic points such as the University and industrial areas. This infrastructure promises to be a sustainable and efficient model to improve urban mobility.
It has five Citadis trams from the French manufacturer Alstom, which have been out of service for the last 14 years.
