The Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has announced that the Verano Joven 2024 (Youg Summer) programme has concluded with great success, with 30% more trips than in the 2023 edition.
In total, 5.2 million trips have been made by almost 1.4 million young people. Thanks to the programme, they have been able to enjoy discounts of up to 90% on the ticket price.
Rail transport was the main mode of transport used, with 63% of journeys (3.27 million), saving an average of €15 per journey. The remaining 27% corresponded to bus journeys.
The autonomous communities with the highest number of journeys were Andalusia, Catalonia, Madrid and the Community of Valencia, with the routes between Madrid and Barcelona and Madrid and Valencia being the most popular.
Verano Joven 2024, up to 90% discount on public transport
As last year, young people born between 1 January 1994 and 31 December 2006, regardless of family income, have been able to benefit from the following travel discounts:
- 90% on conventional medium-distance trains, the metric gauge network and regular state-run buses.
- 50% on Avant single tickets.
- 50%, with a maximum of €30 per ticket, on commercial trains of any operator.
- 50% on the Interrail Global Flexible 10 days in 2 months, when marketed through Renfe.
The Government has earmarked a budget of 130 million euros for Verano Joven 2024. With this measure, the government seeks to promote the use of public transport among young people. Together with the recurrent season tickets, it is one of the main measures to encourage modal shift.
