At 6 a.m., the start of service on the Metro de Madrid network, the extension of Metro line 3 between Villaverde Alto and El Casar, in Getafe, was opened to the public. More than three years of works and several delays due to technical and meteorological difficulties have been completed.
This infrastructure, the first extension of the network in a decade, provides a secure connection to the rest of the Metro network on line 12 (Metrosur).
In addition to the 6 transfers that can already be made to the Madrid Cercanías network and the one that can be made to line 10, there is now a new option that will facilitate journeys between the south of the city, Getafe and the rest of the municipalities through which Metrosur passes.
The works have included the construction of a 2.6-kilometre tunnel using the Belgian or traditional Madrid method and the creation of an intermodal area in El Casar, which integrates MetroSur, the C-3 commuter train line and several bus lines. In addition, the station has a free car park with 565 spaces for electric vehicle charging. It is estimated that around 35,000 people will use this new section every day.
