The governments of Andorra and Catalonia are conducting a feasibility study for Spain’s first international tramway, the Tramvalira. This tramway would connect the town of La Seu d’Urgell with Sant Julià de Lòira.
If the project is implemented, it will provide a sustainable public transport service for the 1,600 people crossing the border daily for work purposes. It will reduce traffic on the N-145 road, which sees peaks of up to 20,000 vehicles per day.
Although in the rest of Europe, there are trams that run in two different countries (and even 3 in the case of the Basel network), this is the first international tram that Spain will have. Although this line will end in Sant Julià de Lòira, it will connect with the future tramway that will connect this municipality with Escaldes-Engordany, passing through the Andorran capital.
To finance the study, Andorra and Catalonia submitted a joint application to the European POCTEFA programme last February.
The study, valued at 700,000 euros, will be supported by 300,000 euros of European funds and contributions from both governments.
Resolution on the funds is expected in the autumn, with studies completed in 2027.
