Spain’s Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, presented the project for the reform and extension of the Valladolid Campo Grande station, replacing the underground project.

The Council of Ministers is expected to approve the tender for the 253 million euros (VAT not included) works today. Construction will start in October this year.

The new station, designed to accommodate five million passengers annually, will double its current capacity. A modern passenger building will be built, and the tracks and platforms will be doubled. In addition, a new square, pedestrian and cycle routes and an underground car park with 600 spaces will be built around it. The façade of the new building will be wrapped in a striking textile skin, which, according to the Ministry, is set to become an architectural icon for Valladolid.

Freight will no longer pass through Valladolid Campo Grande

“This action resolves a pending issue with the station since the high-speed train arrived in Valladolid in 2017”, said Óscar Puente. The aim is to turn Valladolid into a strategic railway hub for passenger services. Therefore, freight traffic will be diverted through the eastern bypass.

The new station will have five 1668 mm gauge tracks, two platforms, seven tracks and four 1435 mm gauge platforms. The main building, with 7,900 m2 of usable space, will be distributed over two floors and two mezzanines, prioritising functionality, accessibility and passenger comfort.

The structure will use 2,200 tonnes of steel, equivalent to the weight of the London Eye, and will be designed according to sustainability criteria. It will consume almost zero energy thanks to high-performance systems and renewable energies.

The project’s key aspect is integrating the station into the city. A 180 x 12-metre connecting platform will be built over the tracks, creating a new urban space 2,000m2 with a cycle path and recreational areas. The historic station building will become the main feature of the new square, which will be free of cars and have landscaped areas. The existing canopy will be refurbished to allow more natural light into the interior.
