Contract awarded for the adaptation of 13 tunnels in Andalusia for the Algeciras-Zaragoza rolling highway

.

Adif has awarded a 26.55 million euro contract to adapt 13 tunnels on the section between Santa Cruz de Mudela (Ciudad Real), Jaén, and Córdoba. These works are part of the plan to develop the Algeciras-Zaragoza rolling highway, which aims to boost rail freight transport.

The tunnels, with a total length of more than 3.5 kilometres, include infrastructure and superstructure works. The section of the tunnels will be enlarged, the platform lowered, and sleepers, rails and ballast will be renewed, along with improvements to drainage and electrification. The longest tunnel is the Andújar tunnel (Jaén), with a length of 1,024 metres.

This project is part of an overall investment plan of more than 500 million euros to adapt railway structures on the Algeciras-Madrid-Zaragoza route. In addition to improving rail transport’s competitiveness compared to road transport, the aim is to strengthen intermodality between Europe and Morocco.

The initiative also includes upgrading other tunnels and overpasses along the route, consolidating the commitment to more sustainable and efficient mobility.
