CargoBeamer’s Calais-Perpignan rolling highway will double the weekly services from 7 October.
The 1,400-km-long route will now have four round trips per week.
Trains will depart from Calais on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. From Perpignan, departures will be on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. As before, DB Cargo France will continue to provide traction.
all about rolling highways. Past, present and future
Each train takes 26 hours to complete the entire route and can carry up to 42 semi-trailers. Each journey saves 47 tonnes of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, an average of 93% of the emissions that the same transport would generate by road.
CargoBeamer’s proprietary technology allows both crane-handled and non-crane-handled semi-trailers to be quickly and conveniently loaded onto trains. The Calais-Perpignan rolling highway links the UK, Benelux and northern France with the Mediterranean coast and Spain.
Although the route is still north of the French-Spanish border, CargoBeamer does not rule out building its terminal in Catalonia in the future.
Boris Timm, CargoBeamer’s chief operating officer, said: “We are delighted to enhance our offering in France after a challenging 2023. The Calais-Perpignan connection, the bridge between the Channel and the Mediterranean region, has proven to be a reliable route. This increase in frequency to four round trips per week offers our customers more flexibility and reinforces our commitment to expand intermodal solutions for non-craneable semi-trailers in France.”
